A structured system for how schools support student mental health.
The Becoming U School-Based Behavioral Health Model is a structured system designed to help schools identify, triage, and support students with mental health needs in a coordinated and consistent way.
Why this model exists
Students are struggling with increasing mental health needs, but most schools do not have a defined system for responding.
Without clear processes in place:
concerns are identified late
support is inconsistent
communication is fragmented
intervention is reactive instead of proactive
Students are not falling through the cracks because people don’t care— they are falling through because no system was built to catch them.
What this model provides
The Becoming U Model establishes a clear and consistent process for:
Identifying students in need of support
Triaging needs based on level of intensity
Connecting students to appropriate Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions
Coordinating support across staff and providers
This creates a system where support is timely, aligned, and responsive to student needs.
-
Students are identified through academic, behavioral, attendance, and social-emotional indicators, as well as staff referrals and data review.
-
Student needs are reviewed and categorized based on level of intensity, ensuring appropriate placement within Tier 2 or Tier 3 supports.
-
Students are connected to structured Tier 2 (targeted) or Tier 3 (intensive) supports, including internal interventions and external services when needed.
-
Support is coordinated across school staff, leadership, and external providers to ensure consistency, communication, and follow-through.
How the model works
Built within a real K–12 school setting
Integrates clinical and educational systems
Moves beyond reactive discipline to structured support
Provides clear pathways instead of informal decision-making
Designed to be scalable across schools and districts
What makes this model different
How schools implement this model
Schools partner with Becoming U Foundation to implement this model through system design, staff training, and ongoing support.
Implementation includes:
Developing referral and triage systems
Establishing Tier 2 and Tier 3 pathways
Training staff on identification and response
Building coordination structures across teams
What this system makes possible
This model creates the structure that allows schools to effectively use tools, curriculum, and training to support students and staff.
Within this system, schools can integrate:
Social-emotional learning supports
Staff training and professional development
Individual skill-building tools for students
